LOGOS

Scope

My artwork undulates between abstraction and imagination, whimsy and irony, and subdued to insolent. I needed my name to stand out amongst all of that and act as the lighthouse in my universe. Something modern, clean, abiding, direct, and, most of all, something secure in and of itself.

Initial Signature

During my formative college years, I made my first real concerted effort at creating a personal identity system. I began creating my mark by using my initials (JJ), forming a lozenge-type shape that circled my name set in caps Eurostile Bold.

I continued pushing the logo mark and reached the “Double J” logo (or Infinity JJ) by first dropping the bulky Eurostile. Then I created an infinity symbol with a thick customized continuous stroke.

Ethos

Justin W John was born on the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay in the Philippines in 1981. He grew up on the East Coast in Virginia and Maryland. His artistic talents lead him to study art and graphic design at the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, MD; he received his BFA the spring of 2003.

Shortly thereafter, Justin relocated to Washington, D.C. and began his career as a freelance graphic/web designer. He was quickly picked up by Aquent and through them gained experience in publishing and in-house corporate design. Soon his clients included B.E.T., The Peace Corps, McGraw-Hill Publishing and more.

With his young creative spirit and passion for music he was also involved with Baltimore and D.C.’s vibrant music scenes by working with a few production companies as a promoter.

While freelancing, Justin also put his creative efforts into the retail service industry. His eye for art and design easily translated into fashion styling and merchandising. He held creative and management roles with Urban Outfitters, Pottery Barn, and FLOR (Interface).

In 2014, Justin moved cross-country to Boise, Idaho to be closer to family. Currently, he lives and creates the majority of his work in his studio in Boise’s historic Idanha Hotel.

The 2019 edition of the Knight Frank Wealth Report indicates that art ranks #1 globally in the top 5 most collected investments of passion. The same report noted that art as a category appreciated 9% in the last 12 months, and 158% in the last 10 years.

In Sotheby’s 2019 Investor Presentation, it is reported that art has had a 0.05 correlation with the S&P 500 over 20 years (based on the Sotheby’s Mei Moses Indices). That lack of correlation can reduce overall volatility when art is part of a larger diversified portfolio.
