North by Northwest

Billings, Montana

North by Northwest

JULY 18 — OCT 10, 2019

The Yellowstone Art Museum is proud to present North by Northwest, The YAM’s first annual juried art exhibition, on view from July 18 – October 10, 2019. The show was conceived by the Yellowstone Art Museum as a way to feature up and coming contemporary artists from across the country, and giving some the opportunity to be accessioned in to the YAM’s permanent collection. The show features 55 artists from 18 states, selected from a pool of nearly 300 entries from 43 states. The works selected run the gamut from traditional oil on canvas paintings to avant-garde interactive sculptural work.

The public is invited to vote on their favorite piece in the exhibition until September 11th. The winning piece will be awarded the People’s Choice Award at the reception on September 12, 2019 along with the Juror’s Choice and Purchase Awards.

The jurying was conducted by Julia Andrews, Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art, who had this to say about the selection process, “Without hesitation I can say that considering the entries for the North by Northwest was a true honor and privilege for me….It should be noted that with over 500 entries there were no entries without merit. Each and every work was thoroughly examined and appreciated for the ingenuity and creative process that delivered the beautiful artistic outcome. It was evident that all submissions had individual strengths and could have received some form of recognition. I resolved… to select work that is of museum quality demonstrated by a high level of skill in technique, composition and presentation. I was deliberate in choosing works that I felt would pique the interest and curiosity of the viewer. In the end, I am proud of the exhibition and believe this show represents the finest artworks submitted. The excellence of these works made the final award process arduous at best, but I feel certain the choices are well deserved.”

I’m truly honored to have my work chosen as one of the 55 artists showing for this exhibition. Moments like this make all the time and effort I put into my work feel a bit more justified. The moments of questioning whether I’m making the right choices, the self-doubt, feelings of insecurity, they all start to feel a bit easier to swallow and keep pushing myself forward.
